[edit] Instrumentation
The band's policy of "any marchable instrument" has allowed band members to augment the usual brass, woodwind, and percussion sections with bagpipes, violins, a didgeridoo, a battery-powered electric guitar, washboards, finger cymbals, and a beer keg.
[edit] Performance Style
The Marching Lumberjacks refer to their band as one of the only scatter bands from a public institution; however the band has not entirely eschewed marching in favor of scattering, but rather uses both as well as tumbling and interpretive dance to move from one formation to another.
[edit] Organization
The band is almost entirely student-run.The officers; Axe Major (Drum Major), General Manager, Treasurer, Equipment Manager, Music Manager, Secretary, and Public Relations Manager are all elected from the band membership, by the band membership. There is an instructor assigned by the University. But the instructors job is often no more involved than having an instructor in the room. This structure makes the Marching Lumberjacks unique amongst public universities.
[edit] History
The modern HSUMLJ was founded in 1968 as an student-run, all-male club shortly after the University-run, coed Humboldt Band lost its funding and disbanded. In the early 1970's the band ended its short all male run and now accepts all humans, musically inclined or not.
[edit] Open Policy
As a recipient of A.S. funding, the HSUMLJ is required to be open to all students, even those with no musical training. The band has turned this policy to its advantage by creating an auxilliary unit called Special Services. Members of this unit are encouraged to find imaginative ways to integrate their abilities with the band. Special Services members have in past years operated large puppets, performed stunts, danced, carried couches in parades, carried bottled water, and carried duct tape for temporary repairs.
