[edit] Description

This is a userspace warning template intended for the talk page of a user whose article is being listed as a copyright violation on the current Wikipedia:Copyright problems listing subpage (today's is here) and whose article has been tagged with the template {{Copyvio}}. This template is not useful for A8 speedy deletion copyvio candidates.

[edit] Usage

Placing {{subst:nothanks-drm|Bertrand Russell}} produces:

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We appreciate your creation of the article, Bertrand Russell, but we cannot accept copyrighted text borrowed from other web sites or printed material. Please see Wikipedia:Copyright problems for more information on this topic, or generally, Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines. Please do not remove the copyright violation notice placed in the article or repost the suspected infringing text. However, if you would like to rewrite the article in your own words, follow the link in the posted notice to create a temporary subpage. If your new article is appropriate, and not a further copyright violation, the reviewing administrator will move that new article into place once the copyright status of the original has been resolved. Happy editing!

[edit] Necessity

The chief impetus for this template's creation is the common (almost ubiquitous) removal of the copyright violation tag by authors, and to have a template more specifically tailored for that procedure than is the general use {{nothanks}} template. In my experience, few editors read the text in the tag, and thus are not informed of the ability to create a new article on the same subject in the temporary subpage. I believe use of this template will lead to fewer such removals.

Note that the reason the template refers specifically to article creation, is that when copyright violation text is added to existing articles, the proper procedure is to revert to the last version before addition of the infringing text. Thus, only articles in which the first edit is a copyright violation should ever have the {{copyvio}} tag posted, so the only users who will be warned with this tag will be the violating article's creator. --Fuhghettaboutit 03:02, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
