[edit] Rivalries?
I don't believe that ND is rivals with Texas and North Carolina. Libertyville | Talk 23:11, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Agree - Notre Dame has played most of the Division I schools. If the bar were set at notching 1 victory in 16 tries or 2 in 8 tries to make a rivalry, there are other schools on page 155 of the Notre Dame media guide that have done better. I could make a better case for Carnegie Tech and Wisconsin. SMU should be out too. There also should be a separation between old and minor. Group29 17:41, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
- This page has lots wrong. Rivalries with Illinois and Indiana? GMAB. Poorly lacking in citations, and reeks of original research. Tool2Die4 (talk) 03:02, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- This article is very poorly cited, although much is in fact true (the games were played, and the rivalries do exist). It is more likely written from a primary source, such as a media guide, that is not cited. I will attempt to hunt down verifiable links to confirm the article. Also, while not a rivalry, ND and North Carolina have played each other a good amount. But due to the lopsided nature of the series, it would be labeled more frequent opponent rather than a rivalry. The same would go for Northwestern and Indiana. Tedmoseby (talk) 04:59, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rivalries vs Frequent opponents
I think this article blurs the distinction between "rivalry" and frequent opponent. Since Notre Dame does not play in a conference, it is easy to understand why the article fails to make the distinction. If the purpose of this article is to discuss the rivalries of Notre Dame, the list should start with the following schools:
Current/active rivalries: USC, Michigan, Michigan St., Purdue, Navy, Pittsburgh, Boston College, and Stanford (due to the Legends trophy).
Inactive/cancelled/historic Rivalries/ series: Miami(the series was canceled because the rivalry got "out of control" , Army (ND put its name on the map by playing/beating Army, but is not as intense since Army has not been as competitive since the 1950's to the present).
As for Georgia Tech and Air Force, ND frequently schedules them, but not frequently enough to be considered a rival in the football sense. The same would go for Northwestern and Indiana. They appear on the schedule often, but not often enough to be called a rivalry. Tedmoseby (talk) 05:16, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Update May 2008
I have reduced this article considerably to those teams which are actually considered rivalries in one capacity or another. Before, the article was expanded to read more as a Notre Dame frequent opponents page. I have reorganized it to reflect intensity of the rivalries. The page is also split into continuous, major rivalries and intermittent rivalries, both active and inactive. Finally, it is organized by how Notre Dame schedules, not by conference. Michigan, USC, Purdue, Mich State and Navy are near permanent fixtures on Notre Dame's schedule and are treated as such. All other teams are considered active or inactive rivalries, but because they are not permanent fixtures on the Irish schedule, they are considered minor, historic, or infrequent. One may not agree with this criteria, but I believe in order to be a "major" rival, the teams should be playing each other annually.(i.e. the caliber of Michgan vs OSU, USC vs UCLA, Texas, vs Oklahoma, etc)Tedmoseby (talk) 00:58, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Created separate Notre Dame-USC rivalry page
I created a separate rivalry page for the series and will be removing all but the most significant games from this page in an effort to shorten the article. I moved most of the notable games over to the page so they would not be lost, and I also sourced and edited the majority of the text to avoid plagiarism. Tedmoseby (talk) 23:26, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
