The plebiscite was not on Norwegian independence. It was on whether the public agreed with the dissolution of the union. This new title serves to enhance the common misconseption that Norway was dependent on Sweden before 1905. This was not the case and it was not the view of the politicians at the time. Great stress was put on the equality of the union from both sides from early on. The only thing joining them was that one person was king of both countries and that they had a common foreign service. Formally it was never a case of the king of Sweden being the king of Norway or of Sweden running the foreign policy. In practice the case was a bit different. My point is that using independence is formally wrong. Norway did not celebrate 100 years of independence in 2005 they marked the centenial of the dissolution of the union. Is there any information on whether the results were genuine and honest? I don't doubt that the Norwegians were in favour of dissolution, but 368208 to 184 (which is 99,95% in favour) seems a bit unlikely, though it may also have had to do with the fact that the dissolution was already a fait accompli.
