The Northwest Army was the name given to the forces of Feng Yuxiang's Guominjun clique that controlled most of north-central China. Under increasing pressure from the expanding power of the Nanjing government, he and Yan Xishan launched a bloody civil war against Chiang Kai-shek in 1929, but were defeated by forces loyal to Nanjing.
