[edit] Campus description
The Annandale Campus is located on Little River Turnpike in Annandale, Virginia, a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington in Fairfax County. The campus is about a mile (1.6 km) outside the Capital Beltway at exit 52. The campus consists of eight main buildings: the Godwin (CG) Building, the Foodservice (CF) Building, the Classroom (CC) Building, the TV Tech (CT) Building, the McDiarmid (CM) Building, the Ernst Cultural Community Center (CE), the Shuler (CS) Building, and the CN (formerly Nursing) Building. Additionally, there are several other buildings on the campus, such as the campus police station, a greenhouse, and several maintenance buildings. All the roads within the campus are designated as Virginia State Route 376. There is a six-story parking garage next to the CN Building, and several large parking lots behind the campus. The back part of the campus is on a large, steep hill typical of the area; because of this, the parking lot entrance to the CM Building is on the first floor, but the entrance from the terrace between the different buildings is on the third floor.
[edit] Diversity
The student body at this campus is extremely diverse, reflecting Northern Virginia in general, and a very large percentage of students are foreign-born. Most foreign-born students are Korean, Eastern European, North African, or Sub-Saharan African. It is common to walk down a hall at NOVA and not hear any English spoken, but to hear people speaking Korean, Polish, Russian, Serbian, French, and Swahili, among many other languages. Due to this, the school's English as a second language (ESL) program is enormous. Many students only attend NOVA to take ESL classes, which do not count for credit. It is very common to see North African women wearing hijabs (headscarves) or less commonly, burqas. However, there are very few Hispanic students, despite the fact that Northern Virginia has a huge Hispanic population.
[edit] Other information
Bus service is provided to the campus by Metrobus. This campus serves most of central Fairfax County, including Annandale, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax City, Fairfax Station, Merrifield, Dunn Loring, Tysons Corner, McLean, Falls Church, Jefferson, Vienna, Oakton, Wolf Trap, North Springfield, West Springfield, and Burke. This area has more than 450,000 people.
