North Sheen is an area of London, England in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.[1]

It forms part of the Richmond post town in the TW postcode area. Due to boundary and post code changes over many decades North Sheen is no longer a defined area. It has been divided by post code into Richmond and Kew. Locally the area alongside the River Thames is now known as Kew Riverside. It is served by North Sheen railway station to the south/southwest, Kew Gardens station (London) to the Northwest and a variety of London Bus routes.[2]

[edit] History

It formed a civil parish from 1894 to 1965. It had historically formed part of the Mortlake parish and became part of the expanded Municipal Borough of Richmond in 1892.[3] Under the Local Government Act 1894, a new North Sheen parish was created from part of Mortlake, with the remainder of Mortlake then forming part of Barnes Urban District. The North Sheen parish covered an area of 329 acres. In 1901 the population was 2,807 and in 1951 it was 7,429.[4]

[edit] Etymology

North Sheen is first marked on maps from 1904.[1] At that time it was mostly undeveloped, but by 1920 residential building was underway.[1] The etymology is shared with East Sheen.
