North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame

Founded as a private non profit corporation in 2003 by Dr. David C. Robinson and Mr. Robert L. Martin, the first induction and awards ceremony of the North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame was held in High Point, North Carolina on November 1, 2004. Eight individuals and three groups of people were inducted. In 2005, the ceremony was also held in High Point, and seven individuals were inducted. In 2006, the ceremony moved to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina (the location of the former Southern Railway’s Spencer Shops) when 8 individuals were inducted.

Each year, the two founders present the Founders’ Award, for which the recipients have been: 2004, Rail Division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, for historic rail station renovation; 2005, North Carolina Transportation Museum, for preserving transportation history; and 2006, Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, for promoting safety and eco-friendly personal transportation.
Starting in 2005, the Perley A. Thomas Award for excellence in school transportation was presented to the Pupil Transportation Group in the Institute for Transportation Research and Education at North Carolina State University. In 2006, it was presented to the late James A. Moen of the Guilford County Schools.
Starting in 2006, the annual Earl E. Congdon, Jr. Award for excellence in highway freight transportation was presented to the North Carolina Truck Driver Training School at Johnston Community College in Smithfield, North Carolina. Also, starting in 2006, the annual Thomas H. Davis, Sr. Award for excellence in aviation was presented to Earl F. Slick.
Prior to the 2006 ceremony, a new museum exhibit dedicated to the NC Transportation Museum ([1]) was unveiled.
