NC 740's southern terminus is at NC 24/27/73 (Main Street) in eastern Albemarle. NC 740 travels nearly 0.5 miles before merging onto its primary road, which stretchs for nearly 12.5 miles.

After darting northeast toward Badin Lake, NC 740 travels through the heart of Badin before darting back northwest. NC 740 through Badin is decorated with many town banners and street lights; most of the stoplights are found on the street corners rather than suspended from overhead wires. The route ends at NC 8 in central New London, giving the route its total length of 13.7 miles. There is just a regular four-way intersection at NC 740's northern terminus, but the ending is well marked.
