North Carolina Boys Choir

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The North Carolina Boys Choir was founded in 1971 by director William Graham. It was originally named the Durham Boychoir, but it was officially named the state boychoir of North Carolina by governor Jim Hunt in 1983. In 1992 the Chamber Choir of tenors and basses was founded as an addition to the touring concert choir. In the summer of 2005 the choir took its first international tour to the United Kingdom.

Each semester culminates in a full scale concert in Duke Chapel, where the choir has performed since its inception.

[edit] Structure

The NCBC is split into three distinct choirs.

The training choir is composed of boys in preparation for joining the concert choir. This group typically contains 9 or 10 year old boys, who spend two semesters in this group before being considered for promotion into the concert choir. Auditions are held at local elementary schools for this choir, as well as upon request from other boys outside the typical auditioning radius.

The concert choir consists of around 35-40 boys ranging from anywhere from 9 to 16. A change in policy in 2004 allowed boys with changed voices to stay in the choir much longer than they would have been permitted to do previously; it was the wish of the director, William Graham to have a self contained tenor/bass section within the concert choir.

The Chamber Choir is made up of graduates of the concert choir, interested area men, and in some cases, fathers of boys in the concert choir.

[edit] Tours

The concert choir is the only touring choir. Each spring, the choir takes a "Mini-Tour" which is more local than the major tour, and takes place after school is out for the boys. In 2005, the choir completed its first international tour.
