Noel Swaranjit Sen

Noel Swaranjit Sen was Director General of Police (DGP) in the state of Andhra Pradesh in south India. His predecessor was S.R. Sukumara[1].

[edit] Personal history

Sen seems to belong to a princely family of Bengal that converted to Christianity and moved into India during the Partition of India. Noel did his schooling from the Bishop cotton ,Shimla. Among his contemporaries were the late Rajiv Gandhi and Arun Poorie of India Today. He is also an alumni of St. Stephen's College, Delhi (1967). His contemporaries there include Kabir Bedi and Kapil Sibal.

His family includes eldest daughter Sharon - a civil servant who is currently in Chandigarh with her husband and son, Kareena - married with children in the USA, Monty - a banker who lives in Hyderabad and Stephen - a lawyer married with a son and daughter, living in Hyderabad.

He earlier had a short spell in the Indian Army and then joined the police force. He was Superintendent of Police in Kurnool district. For a long period, he was the Director-General of Fire Services before being elevated to the position of Home Secretary in 2004, succeeding Bharat Chandra. This was during the Chandrababu Government.

After a brief period, he became the Director-General of Police. Setting controversies aside, he spoke out to his police community that his selection was not based on any undue influence but on pure merit.[2]. His record is straight.

He is a professional policeman. An expert in tackling Naxalism, he has been invited by other states torn with the Naxal menace.[3]

As a church-goer, he testified about his faith in Jesus Christ many times.[citation needed]

His wife was involved in a case of smuggling Indian orphans without proper legal means to other countries with the help of some Christian missionaries[4].

He is also a supporter of the Bible Society of India.[citation needed]
