[edit] Intro

The main event was Randy Orton versus Triple H for the WWE Championship in a Last Man Standing match.[1] The main matches on the undercard were Batista versus The Great Khali for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Punjabi Prison match and CM Punk versus Big Daddy V for the ECW Championship.[2][3]

[edit] Background

The main feud heading into No Mercy on the RAW brand was between John Cena and Randy Orton over the WWE Championship. Cena had defended the title twice against Orton and was successful in his first title defense,[4] and in the second retained after getting disqualified.[5] Right after the match, Jonathan Coachman booked both Cena and Orton to a Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Championship at No Mercy. However, the match never occurred. On October 1 edition of RAW, after Cena had defeated Mr. Kennedy in a non-title match, Orton RKO'd Cena.[6] During the match, Cena tore his right pectoral tendon after a botched hiptoss to Kennedy. As a result of this injury, he was stripped of the title on October 2 edition of ECW[7] ending up a lengthy reign of 380 days.[8][9] McMahon guaranteed that history would be made at No Mercy and promised that a WWE Championship match would occur at the event and a new WWE Champion would be determined.[7]

The main feud on SmackDown! was between Batista and The Great Khali for the World Heavyweight Championship. Batista won the title from Khali at Unforgiven in a Triple Threat match which also involved Rey Mysterio.[10][11] On September 21 edition of SmackDown!, Batista defeated Mark Henry in a non-title match by disqualification. Henry was disqualified because Khali interfered and attacked Batista and put him in a Khali Vise Grip. Khali challenged Batista to a Punjabi Prison match for the World Heavyweight Championship at No Mercy.[12]

The main feud on the ECW brand was between CM Punk and Big Daddy V for the ECW Championship. Originally, an Elimination Chase was planned to determine the #1 contender for the ECW Championship. In the first match of the chase, held on September 18 edition of ECW, Elijah Burke, Stevie Richards, Tommy Dreamer and Kevin Thorn were the participants. Burke eliminated Richards from the chase.[13] On September 25 edition of ECW, Burke was again on top eliminating Thorn.[14] On October 2 edition of ECW, Tommy Dreamer originally won the chase after defeating Burke and was made the #1 Contender to the ECW Championship[15] but General Manager Armando Alejandro Estrada said that the chase was not over and sent Big Daddy V to the ring. Big Daddy V defeated Dreamer with a Samoan Drop to become the #1 contender for the title.[15]

[edit] Event

Before the event went live on pay-per-view, Hardcore Holly defeated Cody Rhodes in a dark match after an Alabama Slam.[16]

The event started with Vince McMahon and William Regal entered into the ring to determine the new WWE Champion. He said that he would fulfill his promise by guaranteeing a WWE Championship match and a new WWE Champion and awarded the WWE Championship to Randy Orton.[17][9] Orton commented that how he felt about getting the WWE Championship. McMahon asked Orton that against which WWE superstar he would like to defend the WWE Championship at No Mercy. Before Orton could tell the name, Triple H's music hit and he entered into the ring challenging Orton for the title.[17] Orton didn't accept the challenge but Triple H insisted for a title shot. McMahon told Triple H "no means no". Triple H started insulting McMahon which forced McMahon to arrange the WWE Championship match between Triple H and Orton.

The first match of the night was between Randy Orton and Triple H for the WWE Championship. Orton defended his newly won title against Triple H. The two had a great and vicious title match. In the beginning of the match, Triple H was distracted by McMahon who claimed to have defeated Triple H twice.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; name cannot be a simple integer. Use a descriptive title[1] Orton took the advantage and attacked Triple H from behind. Orton started beating Triple H and even delivered him an Elevated DDT. Orton tried to beat more but Triple H had the upper hand on Orton. The two were furiously beating each other. Orton attempted to hit an RKO but Triple H pushed him into the turnbuckles. Triple H pinned Orton with a schoolboy pin to win the match and the WWE Championship from Orton.[2][3]

The second match was a six-man tag team match. Mr. Kennedy and World Tag Team Champions Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch faced Intercontinental Champion Jeff Hardy and Paul London and Brian Kendrick. Kennedy, Cade and Murdoch cheated throughout the match. Hardy, London and Kendrick started performing aerial moves in the end of the match and it seemed that these three would win but Cade and Murdoch double-teamed Hardy and Kendrick. Kennedy got London and delivered him a Green Bay Plunge followed by a pinfall victory.[4]

The third match was CM Punk versus Big Daddy V for the ECW Championship. BDV was supported by Matt Striker during the match. In the beginning, BDV got the upper hand by destroying the champion until Punk powered up and started beating BDV. Punk was close of the victory until Striker came into the ring and attacked Punk causing a disqualification victory for Punk. It resulted in CM Punk retaining the ECW Championship by disqualification but after the match, BDV attacked him brutally.[5]

The fourth match was Triple H versus Umaga for the WWE Championship. Triple H didn't get any time to rest[6], but he was just defending the title. Umaga got the upper hand and destroyed the champion. The challenger tried to hit Triple H a Samoan Wrecking Ball but failed to do so. Triple H who was unable to wrestle, yet fought up the challenger and kicked into his mid-section. Triple H delivered Umaga, a Pedigree followed by a pinfall victory. As a result, Triple H retained the WWE Championship.[7]

The fifth match was Rey Mysterio versus Finlay. Finlay started beating Mysterio brutally, furiously and viciously and continued to attack him until Mysterio powered up and started beating Finlay. Mysterio ended the match after dropping Finlay into the bottom rope. He climbed into the top rope and went on to deliver Finlay a Droppin Da' Dime. Finlay's head crashed on the floor and was unable to wrestle anymore. He was put into a neck brace and lifted onto a gurney. Mysterio showed compassion for his fallen opponent. The match was ruled no contest. As Mysterio was walking, Finlay got up and then attacked Mysterio from behind and kept on beating him brutally and then everyone came to know that Finlay made a plan to do this as nothing had happened to his head.[8]

The sixth match was Beth Phoenix versus Candice Michelle for the WWE Women's Championship. Michelle defended the Women's title in a rematch after she successfully defended the title against Phoenix at Unforgiven.[9] The bigger and powerful Phoenix began the match after destroying Michelle
