[edit] The name

The Norse form of the name was Nizidalr. The first element is the name of the lake Nizir (now Nisser), the last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'.

Nisse is the Norwegian for gnome. Nisse are highly regarded in Scandinavia as beings who work with nature and help kind humans. A bowl of cream is a traditional present for a local Nisse. Yulenisse is the Yule Nisse, or Christmas Gnome (Santa Claus).

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1992). It shows three red stocking caps (in Norwegian nisseluer).
