Nirguni bhajans originated around the 12 to 14 century ad, they are the finest most enduring expression of human understanding of spirituality and the reason for most thinking people to break away from organised forms of religion or rituals. Questioning the context of the strictly traditional layers of rituals and religion that society in asia was strapped in, These verses look for answers to the meaning of existence, encourage people to shed their dogma & look at realities in the light that they should be, they continue to enrich our lives to this day through the works of Kabir, Baba Bulleh Shah, The sufi saints jalaluddin Rumi, khwaja moinuddin chisti and many others.
the chief exponent of this style which was direct, basic yet endearing in its simplicity was guru nanak dev Nanak, he gathered all the work completed by several such saint poets such as kabir during his days and began compiling them in a book which later became the guru granth sahib, the holy revered book of the sikhs Sikhism,
In the 19th century the leading light of hindustani classical music pandit kumar gandharva [1], took it upon himself to forge ahead and blend unique compositions of most of the existential works of kabir, which gave them a form and his voice as a medium. this resulted in a revival of sorts of this art form. It still endures and is well appreciated in kumarjis works.
