• After a quarter of a century serving in the Royal Air Force as an airframe engineer on types such as the English Electric Lightning, F-4 Phantom, Blackburn Buccaneer, C-130 Hercules, VC-10 and the Panavia Tornado I moved sideways into the world of Formula 1 where I operate and maintain the wind tunnels for a large Japanese company that rhymes with Jane Fonda. I hold a pilot's license and own a glider and a share in a 1944 de Havilland Tiger Moth. Being a motorcycle enthusiast for the same quarter of a century I own a Triumph Bonneville (restored from a box of bits), a Yamaha FJ1200 and a rare Yamaha RD500LC. I have been known to drive cars occasionally.

• I speak reasonable German from being stationed out there several times during the Cold War but it's getting rusty now.

• I am a lifelong follower of The Stranglers rock/punk/new wave/avant garde (not getting into that one) band who inspired me to learn to play the bass guitar (badly)!

• My English secondary school teacher lives across the road (just in case).

• I always try to be nice to everyone (especially here!).
