Niederwenigern

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niederwenigern is a small borough of the City of Hattingen in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is about 15 minutes by car from the center of Hattingen along the Ruhr River but closer (about 5 minutes) to Kupferdreh a part of the town Essen. The population is about 6,000 and before 1970, it was independent. Niederwenigern has a Roman Catholic church, a local landmark, St. Mauritius Cathedral. There is also a Lutheran-Evangelical Protestant church, the faith of most Protestant Christians in Germany. There is also the Nikolaus-Groß-Museum..

Niederwenigern itself has a smaller subpart, called Dumberg. Best known for its horse riding club, Dumberg is a rural hamlet actually bordering on the City of Essen. There are a lot of other horse riding opportunities in Niederwenigern and the surrounding villages.

Except for local bars and some shops or grocerie stores like the HL-Market (now, since the mid of 2007, it is renamed in REWE-Market), Niederwenigern itself does not provide lots of entertaining facilities. To entertain the people, there is always a big "Kirmes" called "Mauritius Kirmes", a celebration where artists gather and offer scooters, candystands and other amusing stuff, you're probably used to seeing in a fun park. People from all around this area, that live in the surrounding cities or town, come together and enjoy the "Kirmes", that lasts about 3-4 days. Other things to do is definitely riding your bike on the several biketrails along the Ruhr river. On those, you can go far: All the way down the Ruhr river and even to the Rhine river.
