Re: Image deletion

Since it's been deleted, it would need to be undeleted or reuploaded to be put back into an article. I would think just getting a better image would be a better end result though. Though, I don't remember anything about this image since I've gone through thousands of images during that time frame and can't remember any specifically. MECU≈talk 15:28, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps you could just retrieve the image, send it to the graphics lab and have then vectorize it and then just use that one? I'll guess that it was removed because it was LQ or vandalism, and then things went from there. I'm not morally opposed to this (or any) image, it's just we should be using the images we have. I used to track daily the number of orphaned images. It's back over 100,000 which is why I'd go through and nominate for deletion or try and use them. If you can find a use for the image and improve it, by all means, you don't need my approval. MECU≈talk 19:44, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Indonesia - FAC

Hello there. Thanks for your comments in the Indonesia FAC. I have a few questions or requests for further clarification. Would you mind if I discussed them here, and I can then post their resolution (or otherwise?!?) on the FAC page.

1. Mos for units (m, mi, km, C not followed) -- see formatting for Climate of India.
The style in Indonesia should be converted to whatever style is the most accepted. But, I need more specific direction and I don't want to chop and change back and forth - I'd like to get it 'correct' the first time, as you can no doubt understand. :) Can you provide a link to a definitive set of rules? Is this the guide?
By the way, I'm just looking at Geography_of_India and i need to confirm apparent inconsistencies:
a total land area of 3,287,590 km² (1,269,219 square miles).
should actually read:
a total land area of 3,287,590 square kilometers (1,269,219 m²)., right?
2. Image sizes are inconsistent, try thumbing the images, removing the set pixel.
Good point. I will see what I can do - note, many pics have varying aspect ratios. But this is consistently changed over and over by editors with different ideas/opinions (groan).
3. Many words linked repeatedly.
YEs - that is a lot of work to check, but must be done.
4 {{tl|main}] should come before an image in a section
Done - i think. I found two instances [1] & [2].
5 It's interesting that Indonesia shares a sea border with Australia, but not India. Considering that the northern tip of Aceh is 140 odd km from Indira Point in the Nicobar Islands, what would be the basis for the omission?
I think I will change this to "land borders with x x x & x, and also neighbors x x x & x" in line with FA article Australia. I don't actually know whether it does officially have such sea borders - it is just an assumption which is not good enough. As for the India border question, there needs to be a cut-off. Personally, I think mentioning the proximity of India simply because Nicobar islands is close to Aceh is dwelling too much on an insignificant technicality for a summary article - by the same token we could also then introduce Thailand, Cambodia and Brunei. Where do we draw the line? Anyway, I am not saying 'no' and I am open to your further thoughts (Incidently the main india locator map does not include the islands as part of India - and error no doubt. [3])
6 (not an oppose) Maps should be SVG
I'm no good with maps - i will see, but it seems this is just a non-FAC-killer preference?
7 ...these include Indians... -- inaccuracte; India was not a unified country back then; "Indian kingdoms" would be more accurate.
I have changed it in this instance as it works fine - but we should be careful about extrapolating that point to other instances both on this page and countless others. Could be an ugly WP precedence - for many countries. But, maybe that is a point for another day. :)

Hi - it's the weekend and I'd like to tidy up as much of the FAC as I can. Did you have any outstanding concerns? Could you check? What about the svg's? Initially you suggested it wasn't an FAC killer, and furthermore, I don't understand much about what the advantages might be. COuld you strike out and 'answered' concerns - even write "support" (or am I pushing my luck? lol). Review 3

I've gone through your points and addressed them appropriately (IMO). They were all useful and identified problems. The only points i query 2 & 4; i can accept that wording can always be improved for clarity/prose but they were worded in such a way to deal with the historical complexities which I've expanded on a bit on the FAC page. This is particularly the case with the issue of independence.

As for the strike outs and your time pressures, if you are agreeable, may I strike out your points for you? At least for your first two reviews if you are satisified with the responses. kind regards Merbabu 01:29, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Re:Bot

Yes, it is possible. I can write a python script for it. There may be a faster alternative. Sumanthk had recently done something similar with villages using WP:AWB. Let me check with him on this. Comments about Indian empire maps

Some maps like kadamba are not drawn on top India locator map and do not have capitals. Some maps like Hoyasala map have red color instead of orange color shade. What is your take on following uniform standard for all these empire maps? Political history of medieval Karnataka and many empires articles use them. Hi

I had submitted several articles for assessment by Wikiproject India. I note you have removed the WP India tag from the talk page articles stating 'not in scope'. I was under the impression that an article can fall under multiple wikiprojects. Therefore film articles, bollywood actors etc fall under WP India and WP Indian cinema. In other words, the tags shouldn't have been removed.

Is there any policy or guideline to follow in such cases?

I'm replying here to avoid cross-posts. To evaluate the ratings, think of India as a single entity. What makes up India? History, geography, people, companies, law, indigenous musical instruments; all these can be clubbed under India. Movies on the other hand are only produced in India -- they have nothing much with India as an entity -- it hasn't contributed to India as a whole. Look at it the other way. Take away Peshwa rule, and India is not complete. Take away Tawang, and India is not complete. Take away Aap Ki Khatir (2006 film), and it does not make a difference. Exceptions to this are movies that India has presented to the Oscards, award winning entries etc. Bollywood actors come under WP India as Indian citizens. Similarly a tournament which was hosted in India has little to do with India. If there was a WP Indian hockey, then it would come under that project. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:27, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

I disagree with you on the above point, as I believe its a little difficult for me as an individual editor to decide whether or not a particular topic is of any importance to the country as a whole. Division naming convention

Would appreciate your comment on proceeding on Gracenotes, RfA

Hi Nichalp,

As one of the Bureaucrats recently active on RfA, I would like your opinion on how to handle Gracenotes' rather difficult RfA.

There are a huge number of opinions (over 200 supporting and over 70 opposing) and a great deal of argumentation. I would like to reserve a "Bureaucrat Chat" for the really, really difficult and unique situations, like Danny. My concerns here are that:

  • The bureaucrats should not be put in the position of being "supervoters," evaluating everything the community already hashed over, but at a "higher" level;
  • I would like to see this RfA separated from some very strong and quite valid (to the individuals most involved) emotion, as much as this is possible; and
  • Almost all the detailed opposition revolves around a single issue that I believe has acquired a life of its own separate from the candidate's qualifications, and I think Gracenotes at least deserves a chance to make a coherent presentation on the issue and allow the community to express their opinions anew in that light.

I had earlier posted a way forward that can be found (with some comments) at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats'_noticeboard#One_Bureaucrat.27s_Impression. I would like to proceed according to the six steps I suggested, which has the assent of both the Candidate, and the first opposer on the BADSITES issues, SlimVirgin.

Nichalp, I became upset when I read this comment. I think that the level of tolerance you've shown in dealing with all of the newer users at Talk:India over the last several months (if not years) is amazing (it's more than I could ever hope to do). Username redirects

You had nicely usurped my name some time ago — can you merge/redirect User:Sesshōmaru, User:Sesshômaru, User:Sesshoumaru and their talk pages to my username/usertalk space? It is allowed, I presume? The names aren't even in use and if they were, they would've been blocked for being too identical to mine. Though the "Sesshoumaru" account is strange; it was created, but never contributed. Concerns about false representation of reasons for opposing Gracenotes

Hi, Nichalp. I am concerned that oppose votes in the Gracenotes RfA may be dismissed as being due to the candidate's failure to give 100% support to the idea of removing 100% percent of links to attack sites regardless of context. I'm particularly concerned at your comments, where you say that most of the opposers opposed because they thought Gracenotes supports linking to these sites, and in fact he doesn't, so promotion would be appropriate. I think that is a misrepresentation (though I'm sure it's an innocent one) of the views of those who have concerns about trusting the buttons to someone who shows the attitude that the candidate shows towards a site which engages in feverish attempts to find out the real life identity of Wikipedians (posting what they believe are their photos, trying to contact what they believe are their ex-boyfriends, or egging on those who do). As I pointed out at the Bureaucrat chat talk page, it's a bit like seeing lots of people opposing a candidate because of concerns over civility, and then dismissing those votes by claiming that the opposers opposed because they wanted to see an exaggerated, excessive, obsequious politeness.

I will accept whatever the decision is, but at the very least, I would hope that the bureaucrats would try not to be influenced by misrepresentations of the concerns of the opposers. Could I request that you read my post, linked to above? I admit it's long, and I apologize for that. But it does make what I believe are very important points — especially the one that I recently supported someone for adminship after he said that he thought it would be okay to link to attack sites in the "Daniel Brandt" and "Criticism of Wikipedia" articles; and that SlimVirgin thanked him for his reply and didn't vote. Hi Musical Linguist. I understand your point equating civility with the proposal. On the other hand, it would be quite an ask to paint all the oppose votes with the same brush. As far as the BADLINKS issue is concerned, I haven't discounted any oppose vote on the topic, rather given them a lower base oppose. I also have considered that there are over 200 community members who have expressed confidence in Gracenotes ability in handling the tools.
