Hi Nichalp, I believe you've interacted with this user. He has been making lots of changes to articles such as Bollywood but does not discuss them or address concerns raised on talkpages. He has manually copy-paste moved Mahatma Gandhi to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi despite a discussion as recent as one week in which the consensus was not to do so. I have reverted his changes, but I am wondering if there is any thing else that can be done to put a stop to his ways so far? [edit] Festivals/Classical dance

Your edit left only S Indian classical dance standing, while pruning all the N Indian ones!!! I have reverted some of them, and classified to make sense. The argument is that only those patronized by classical art institutions such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi and such need (and should) be included.

If parochial fests such as Onam and Pongal are to be included, so do DP and GC. ofcourse expats from TN and KL celebrate them all over India, but the same argument apps to DP and GC too.

May be concentrating on adding non-Hindu fests/folk art ought to be the focus now.

Hi Nichalp, Why don't we start a Wikiproject Geography of India.That will generalise several Wikiprojects like Indian states and Indian cities and also will incorporate other Indian geography related articles.Ofcourse, there are advantages of separate projects of States and Cities,but I feel Geography of India will be a broader project in which may be more Wikipedians will join ! Could you take a look into it? Some anon has started ranting against wikipedia inside the article!!! The guy yesterday tried to put a large amount of discussion on Jules Verne's novel somehow being related to IIM, which was reverted. Then he added a lot of personal commentry, which Deepak and Sundar reverted. Now he is inserting rants which include words like The stupid traitor dogs", and also censorship in wikipedia. Since I've already done two reverts today, I'm not going to rv further, so could you look into the matter? Thanks. --Ragib 01:20, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

The Atlas moth was first discovered in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai, India. I am curious about the source of this information. From what I see, the species was described by Linnaeus in 1758. Shyamal 04:44, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Okay, this confirms my view. We get the Atlas moths in many places in India. When the reporter wrote it, s/he meant that it was seen in SGNP. I think the mention in the Atlas moth article implies that it was first described from a specimen that came to the hands of Linnaeus and that this specimen was obtained from SGNP. I am taking off the line from Atlas moth but the statement in the SGNP article is correct ! Shyamal 10:27, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Nicholas - Lothal is awfully close to FAC. If/when you have time, can you please give it a final look? The last time you commented you said the FU images and lack of multiple refs were a problem. I've worked to address both issues, but the core ref is a guidebook which gives most of the details, while the FU images are integral despite my adding other properly licensed images. Thought you may wish to take another look at Glacier retreat. I added some more to the Asia section and we have trimmed the N.American and Alaskan sections as well. The TOC is no longer TOCleft. Much of the Asia information is very hard to get and that is a shame as I know there is much that can be learned by it, but I managed to find three more excellent pieces of evidence. Hi, I saw that at User talk:Pizzadeliveryboy#Maps of Mumbai copyright and Wikipedia talk:Notice board for India-related topics/archive4#Template:PD-IndiaGov you have stated that for all the images uploaded into Wikipedia derived and commercial use should be allowed. As is usually the case, IANAL but AFAICT this is only true for those images for which fair use is not being claimed. Such images can also be uploaded into commons:, but for images used under fair use derived and commercial use are not allowed. It might not always be legal to include even unmodified fair-use in copies of Wikipedia content, e.g. if the copy is not in the USA and the image is such that US fair-use law allows it but the fair-use law in the country in which the copy resides doesn't. Commercial use of fair-use images is obviously prohibited. I'm skeptical about the legality of modifying fair-use images, i.e. derived use of these images (except for personal use). -- Paddu 16:28, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Since PDB did not have a complete understanding of copyright issues, I mentioned acceptable wiki licences in plain English. There are many free images available for the Mumbai article, so uploading fair use images are rather redundant. To upload an image under the FU clause, one must: 1. Justify its usage 2. Use it in context. 3. Not dwell on the subject of the image. Since the issue on FU is a picky issue on WP, my first goal was to prevent newbies from uploading unnecessary images to WP till they had completely grasped wikipedia rules.
I just wanted to make sure you understood the slight "exception" to your statement for "fair-use" images. I was afraid people might misunderstand you or WP:FU due to those statements.
WRT if the copy is not in the USA and the image is such that US fair-use law allows it but the fair-use law in the country in which the copy resides doesn't. I'm not conversant with international copyright laws, but since the servers are based in Florida, local laws apply. (This also applies to other transnational laws.). Images in commons: are governed by the the nationality of the uploader or the source nation of the image. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:33, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Neither am I conversant with international copyright laws (or even national copyright laws for that matter :) ). I was just saying derived use of a Wikipedia image outside of the US might not be allowed if the derived image is outside of the US. -- Paddu 17:48, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

It looks like the Indian portal stands a good chance at becoming INCOTW for next week. Even if it dosen't, as you say, we should probably clean it up and allow for better organization. I would like to propose a change in the color combination used in the portal main page — it currently looks dull. The Australian portal's fontpage is interesting and perhaps we can model our frontpage based on that. I will work on some layouts this week and probably over the weekend. Hi. It might behoove us to wait till Monday to determine what color changes, if any, need to be made after you're able to see the portal in true color. It seems to look decent from where I'm seeing it, but I would like as much input as possible on the matter. Also, as far as the layout, you are right. I have gone ahead and changed the code for better alignment on an 800x600 screen. I was using a 1024x768 screen to design it, so I didn't notice the issue initially. That now stands corrected. Thanks for the reply. If I may ask of you to look over the images now. From my own look, every picture has been uploaded by the original author, and should be fine, with the exception of two pictures. The first, the picture of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, is defined as fair use but the tag on the image says that it "[t]he copyright holder has irrevocably released all rights to it." The second questionable picture is the picture of the 1000 Pakistani rupee. The image page says the image is free to use it if the article "will use the images in some form of educational capacity." Thanks, Nichalp. I've posted Holi on Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/March 15. I chose 'Dhulandi' because that's the word used in the article for the second day of Holi. Rangpanchmi (Rangapanchmi ?), according to the article, takes place a few days later. (I don't know when we start counting the 5 nights of the full moon, though.) What I put on MainPage should match the contents in the linked pages. I'd also thought about posting 'Burning of the Holika' on the 14th, but the page has a {{cleanup}} tag and Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/March 14 seems too crowded already.
