The Niagara Parks Police (NPP) provides policing services for the Niagara Parks Commission in Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. The NPP was first established in 1887.
Many NPP officers are Special Constables who receive their basic training at the Ontario Police College. The NPP are conferred the powers of police officers within the Province of Ontario, as it relates to the Niagara Parks system. The officers are not police officers but are special constables that are given "police powers" to enforce various laws in relation to the special constable appointment. They are responsible for the property of the Niagara Parks. The jurisdictional police(Niagara Regional Police Service) maintain primary law enforcement authority over all areas of Niagara Region, including Niagara Parks. The appointment authority is given by the Niagara Regional Police Service's Board and by the Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections of Ontario, and it must be renewed every 5 years. The funding for Niagara Parks Police comes out of the budget for Niagara Parks, an agency of the Province of Ontario. The NPPS are responsible for the following:
- management of the vehicle and pedestrian traffic
- maintaining the peace
- ensuring the safe return of lost property to its rightful owners
- discretionary enforcement required of the Criminal Code of Canada and other federal and provincial statutes.
During peak tourist season the Parks Police employ approximately thirty five students, most of who are participants in local law and security courses. These unarmed members hold the designation of Provincial Offenses Officer and are primarily responsible for the orderly flow of traffic and parking offenses.
