[edit] Abakwi language

Abakwi is a "constructed language", putatively spoken by two tribes in a remote area of the Mamberamo basin of Irian Jaya, on the island of New Guinea. The language was supposedly described by James MacBeith Finlay (also fictional), who postulated that it may be a creole formed of two extinct and unattested languages.

The Abakwi language materials are presented in a web facsimile of a historical source. While probably not qualifying as a hoax (the anonymous author has submitted material about Abakwi to a website devoted to constructed languages), there have been cases of people mistaking Abakwi for an authentic Papuan language.
