[edit] Origin of name
Removed from article: "They were thought to be named after the many (nga) feathered canoe decorations (puhi) which canoes that arrived into New Zealand dropped of in this area." There are several theories about the origin. Most concern either chiefly female virgins (puhi) or people whose names started with Puhi, not canoe decorations. Nurg 10:15, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
I dont think that Ngati Hine should be given the title of an Iwi.This will damage the funds given to the northland tribes due to there being more than one Iwi with in the Peowhairangi region. This doesn't seem right.I have Ngati Hine in my blood but I still have to disagree with these claims that Ngati Hine is an Iwi.Ngati Hine should always and will always be a sub-tribe of Ngapuhi-Nui-tonu
- I moved the above to here as it seems more of a discussion than a central part of the article. My impression was that Ngati Hine felt they could manage their own affairs more efficiently than Ngapuhi. ping 07:24, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
