NFL's Greatest Games

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NFL's Greatest Games is a series of 90-minute television programs that have aired on ESPN and related networks. They are condensed versions of some of the most famous games in the history of the National Football League, using footage and sound captured by NFL Films, as well as original interviews.

The series began with Super Bowl III, the New York Jets' 16-7 upset of the Baltimore Colts. ESPN debuted the program in 1999, on the 30th anniversary of the original game. More telecasts followed in the ensuing months.

In 2007, NFL Network unveiled Super Bowl Classics, a version of this program using complete videotaped games.

The 1987 AFC Championship episode is the only version to use only audio from the television commentators, in this case, NBC's Dick Enberg & Merlin Olsen. The Super Bowl XXV episode primarily used Van Miller and Greg Brown's radio broadcast of the game, as well as portions of Al Michaels, Dan Dierdorf, and Frank Gifford's telecast from ABC's broadcast. Additionally, the 1993 Wild Card game also used ABC audio, this time from Brent Musburger and Dick Vermeil, along with the Detroit and Green Bay radio broadcasts, as did the 1996 AFC Divisional playoff game using team radio as well as NBC audio featuring Enberg, Phil Simms and Paul Maguire. Also, the 1981 NFC Championship episode used the audio by Jack Buck and Pat Summerall; who called the game for CBS Radio.
