Template:Newc/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Purpose: It is common practice for editors of an article to add messages to previous editors' talk pages and to the article's own talk page. Two problems then appear: where does one place responses and will the original poster see it (i.e., has the user added the talk page to his/her watchlist)? It is also difficult for observers of a conversation to figure out where it is currently taking place.

It is hoped that this template is a solution.

Usage:

{{subst:newc|subject=Subject of conversation}} causes wiki markup to be inserted that sets up an empty conversation view.

If a subject is not provided, the default is "Untitled".

It is imperative that this template be substituted.

Example:

Testing

I wonder if this works. Jack (add a reply)

Hey! It worked! Jill (add a reply)

What are you two up to? Mandy (add a reply)

Oh, nothing much. We are just testing the {{newc}} template. Jill (add a reply)
... and it seems to work! Jack (add a reply)

Oh cool! I can cross-post this entire conversation on my talk page by just adding this:

<div class="conversation">
<h2>{{{subject|Testing}}}</h2>
{{newc/h1|20070516030049.9641}}
</div>

<!-- DO NOT ADD ANYTHING HERE. Instead, go back one page and follow the "add to this conversation" link. -->

Mandy (add a reply)

Notes: As seen in the example, it is easy to cross-post a conversation anywhere. Simply copy to the destination the <div> tag and the comment[1] from the page where {{newc}} was originally substituted.

Suggestions:

  • As the proper use of this template is non-trivial, it is recommended that it not be used on anonymous IP addresses' talk pages or on new users' talk pages.
