[edit] Images
The images in this article need to be better organized as they are currently all over the place. Perhaps a few mansion pictures, a coastal picture, etc, and the rest in a gallery at the bottom of the article. I only make note of this because I do not know how to make a gallery myself. - I'm not even sure we need a gallery. Most of the pictures are mansions, and we have a whole page especially for that topic now, so having just one here would suffice. DMacks 16:46, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

- Where is the page of mansions? Charles 16:49, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

- Aw dang, I think I was thinking of Newport Cliff Walk, so not really specific to the mansions. DMacks 16:56, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

- What one image best represents Newport and would be good in the lead infobox? The two loose ones there now I don't think are good (from a distance, don't have anything distinct or distinctive, etc). DMacks 16:56, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

- I'm inclined to say the Mary Street picture evokes a good image of Newport. The bridge picture has too much going on in it and isn't really exemplary and the coastal picture below it (as of right now) is rather generic. I can't say Belcourt, since I'd be biased (I took that picture) and The Breakers isn't truly representative of the city's heritage in my opinion. So I'm still going to say the Mary Street picture. - Concurred with Mary St. I nuked the other two. At best, the bridge picture could be used to illustrate present-day fishing/boating activities and one of the coast pictures could suffice for the beach-related activities. DMacks 17:15, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

- I fully agree. Next, I think, an article on the Newport mansions should be created. Obviously there are individual articles, but there is a lot of common history between them that could be presented with links, etc. Charles 17:22, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Weird history
Regarding the first line of the History of Newport. Who is Michael Young? Ac 70.183.15.137 22:24, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Probably nobody. I've removed it. DMacks 22:27, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] History Split
I disagree with the proposed change to create a separate article for the history. It flows fine, is commonsensical, and is very representative of what most people would be looking for if they wanted to learn about Newport. I would actually like to add more to the Modern Era section regarding Newport's one time status as one of America's richest city's during British Rule, prohibition. - I diagree. The histroy section is more than twice as long as that of New York City. It does not follow WP:SUMMARY: "When there is enough text in a given subtopic to merit its own article, that text can be summarized from the present article and a link provided to the more detailed article." There is certainly "enough text" in the section. It therefore should be split, with a "see also" link at the top of the shortened history section. Cheers, Rai-me 23:16, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Current era
I disagree with the statement that President Kennedy made Hammersmith Farm his "Summer White House." I remember clearly that his "Summer White House" was the Kennedy Family Compound in Hyannisport, MA (generally identified in the media simply as "Hyannis") and that the term "Hyannis White House" was current when JFK was president.
