Isn't New York state a part of New England?

No. No definition [1] of New England has been produced that includes New York state.

I'm from Western Connecticut and don't care about Boston, cheer for New York teams, and would never be associated with so inferior a city when I'm a clearly part of New York City

Being a part of New England doesn't mean your economic and cultural life is dominated by the inferior city of Boston. Since every definition that can be produced includes all of Connecticut, any expansion of the New York metro area must be viewed as changing the nature of New England, not grounds for a redefinition of its boundaries. This means that part of New England is dominated by New York City.
