Newmarket is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Flemington, on the Craigieburn railway line. Classed as a Host station, it is part of Metcard Zone 1.
[edit] Facilities
The station is located at the northern end of the Racecourse Road rail overpass, with access also from Pin Oak Crescent. Tram route 57 is a short walk from the station. Newmarket station consists of two elevated side platforms. Platform 1 contains a large red brick building while platform 2 contains a smaller red brick building. A large Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platform 1, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platform 2. A subway is located underneath the station.
Newmarket railway station is not served trains on the Flemington Racecourse line, as these trains bypass both Newmarket and Kensington stations. There are signs on the station advising customers that Showgrounds trains do not stop at the station.
[edit] History
Newmarket station originally opened on 1 November 1860.
The station was used during construction of CityLink in the 1990's to shuttle passengers to and from Flemington Bridge station (on the Upfield line). This was because Macaulay station was closed, and trains did not run between Flemington Bridge and North Melbourne. This was necessary to allow the construction of raised roads linking the West Gate Freeway with the Tullamarine freeway for the CityLink project. This meant that journey times were extended by 10-20 minutes for passengers travelling to and from Upfield.
Also Newmarket station had been upgraded to be more 'accessible'. This included a new wheelchair ramp being installed on the Platform 1 side, Pin Oak Crescent. There was an existing ramp, however the new one was given shelter, and it's incline was less than the old one. A new ramp was also constructed on Platform 2, however does not have a shelter.
