[edit] Overview
Newcastle Airport has direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Canberra, Port Macquarie and Norfolk Island.
It shares its runway with RAAF Base Williamtown. Whilst the airfield is classified as a military airfield, civilian operations are permitted. Managed by Newcastle Airport Limited for the joint owners, Newcastle City Council & Port Stephens Council, the facility is leased from the Federal Government for the purposes of civilian air travel, currently until 2045.[2]
The largest aircraft currently operating into Newcastle airport is a Virgin Blue B737-800, but at the moment the civil apron can handle anything up to a B767. Upgrades to the apron later this year will enable anything up to a A330 and B787 size aircraft to operate from the airports apron. The airport can handle anything up to a B747.
Pacific Blue has shown interest in operating flights between Newcastle and New Zealand to either Auckland or Christchurch using Embraer E-Jets aircraft to start off with and then if demand persists, Boeing 737's.[citation needed]
The terminal facilities have recently been upgraded to cope with future demand and security requirements. The new terminal facilities were commissioned on 9 November 2005.
Williamtown was also named the Regional Airport of the Year 2005 by the Australian airports industry.
Impulse Airlines, a regional airline and later one of Australia's first low cost airlines established a base at the airport in the early 1990s. It established a maintenance facility at the airport, which became the maintenance base for Jetstar's Airbus A320 fleet following Qantas' acquisition of Impulse in 2001 and subsequent restructure to create Jetstar.
The Newcastle Jetstar Maintenance Base also provides third party aircraft maintenance for the Qantaslink B717. The base can also provide third party aircraft maintenance for other airliners with similar planes as Jetstar's.
