New York State Route 434 (commonly known as the Vestal Parkway) is a state highway located in the Southern Tier of the U.S. state of New York. The route extends for 20.89 miles (33.62 km) and runs from an intersection with NY 96 in Owego to an intersection with US 11 in Binghamton. It is the former route of NY 17 prior to the construction of the Southern Tier Expressway, which NY 434 parallels. The section from Owego to NY 26 in Vestal was briefly New York State Route 188 in the late 1960s.

[edit] History

When state highways in New York were first signed in 1924, what is now NY 434 was designated as part of NY 17, a cross-state highway connecting Erie, Pennsylvania, to New York City.[3] The route remained unchanged until the late 1960s when NY 17 was realigned onto the newly built Southern Tier Expressway from Owego to NY 26 in Vestal.[citation needed] The former routing of NY 17 was then redesignated NY 188 in 1969.[4] On January 1, 1970, NY 188 was renumbered to NY 434 and truncated on its western end to the Broome-Tioga County line.[2][4] By 1980, the remainder of the NY 17 expressway in the area had been completed, resulting in the extension of NY 434 on both ends to include the entirety of former NY 17 between Owego and Binghamton.[5]
