[edit] Route description
NY 120 begins in the city of Rye at U.S. Route 1 as Purchase Street, crossing under Interstate 95 without a junction. It continues into the village of Harrison (specifically, the community of Purchase), where it has junctions with Interstate 287 and the Hutchinson River Parkway. An alternate route, NY 120A, begins near the junction of NY 120 and I-287. NY 120 also serves Manhattanville College, the State University of New York at Purchase, and the Westchester County Airport. NY 120 then continues northward into the town of North Castle where it meets up with the other end of NY 120A (King Street). The NY 120 designation continues north on King Street. It has a junction (and short overlap) with NY 22 in North Castle then passes briefly through the northeast corner of the town of Mount Pleasant, heading into the town of New Castle. King Street ends at the Saw Mill River Parkway but NY 120 continues northwest along Quaker Road. Within New Castle, NY 120 serves the hamlets of Chappaqua, Tompkins Corners, and Millwood. NY 120 ends in Millwood at NY 100.
[edit] History
NY 120 was originally assigned in the 1930 state highway renumbering, when most of the state routes in Westchester County were first given route numbers.[citation needed] Until the early 1960s, the south end of NY 120 ran along a slightly different alignment. At the intersection with Westchester Avenue (CR 62), it turned southeast onto that road, overlapped with NY 119, ending at US 1 in Port Chester. The section of Purchase Street south of Westchester Avenue was then known as NY 119A. Modern 120 now continues south along Purchase Street to US 1. The old southern end has been reassigned as an extension of NY 120A.
[edit] NY 120A
NY 120A (8.55 miles (13.76 km)[1]) is an alternate route of NY 120 between Harrison and North Castle.
