The New England Railroad is a proposed heritage railroad that is tentatively scheduled to begin operations in New England and Quebec in June 2009.[citation needed]
The railroad intends to use the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad route from Portland, Maine to Montreal, Quebec via Gorham, New Hampshire, North Stratford, New Hampshire, Island Pond, Vermont, and Sherbrooke, Quebec.
A secondary route is also proposed to operate from Portland to Montreal via North Conway, New Hampshire, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and Newport, Vermont.
