New Community Jewish High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New Community Jewish High School, also known as "New Jew," is located in West Hills, California; as it does not have its own location, it rents space from Shomrei Torah synagogue in West Hills, beginning in 2004. Originally the school was housed in the West Valley Jewish Community Center in Woodland Hills (affectionately called Old Jew).

In 2006 the school graduated its first class, and since then has grown to almost 400 students. The school teaches a conventional high school curriculum, yet requires Hebrew language classes, taught using the NETA program, and two Jewish classes for all of its students every year. The school seeks to create a community in which all of its members feel safe and supported. Although tuition is extremely expensive (upwards of $25,000 per year), tuition assistance is offered to all in need. Interestingly, because the school is so new all of the students featured in the school's advertisement are either current students or have graduated in the past two academic years. It is currently among the fastest growing Jewish high schools in the U.S.

New Jew's Cross Country team has won their league championship the past three years in a row but does not compete in CIF because the Southern Section meet takes place on a Saturday. Due to the fact that the School is Jewish and the meet is on Shabbat the team does not participate.
