Homo noeticus is a term loosely translated as "Spirit-Soul Man" and refers to a posited 'next stage in human evolution' by some New Agers. Mystics such as P. D. Ouspensky, Jan van Rijckenborgh and Rudolf Steiner have predicted this or something similar as a new stage in human development.
Homo noeticus is believed to possess abilities which are now seen as paranormal, such as telepathy, telekinesis and a heightened spiritual awareness. The purported existence of indigo children is cited as evidence of this phenomena.

Quantum-Touch is a hands-on healingsystem that utilizes "universal life force energy" to assist oneself and others heal physical and emotional issues. Quantum-Touch differs somewhat from Reiki in that practitioners are taught specific body awareness and breathing techniques to augment the flow of energy from practitioner to client. Quantum-Touch falls under the broad category of "energy healing" within the realm of Alternative medicine.

Some proponents of a more modern version of the Law of Attraction claim that it has roots in Quantum Physics. According to them, thoughts have an energy that attracts like energy. In order to control this energy, proponents state that people must practice four things:
=>Know what one desires and ask the universe for it. (The "universe" is mentioned broadly, stating that it can be anything the individual envisions it to be, from God to an unknown source of energy.
=>Focus one's thought upon the thing desired with great feeling such as enthusiasm or gratitude. Feel and behave as if the object of one's desire is already acquired.
=>Be open to receiving it.
=>Thinking of what one does not have, they say, manifests itself in the perpetuation of not having, while if one abides by these principles, and avoids "negative" thoughts, the Universe will manifest a person's desires.
This list of four steps, couched in quasi-scientific terms, is quite similar to, and was influenced by, the panentheistic "Seven Steps in Demonstration" first outlined in the famous non-denominational New Thought book Become What You Believe by Mildred Mann (1904 - 1971):
+Desire. Get a strong enthusiasm for that which you want in your life, a real longing for something which is not there now.
+Decision. Know definitely what it is that you want, what it is that you want to do or have, and be willing to pay in spiritual values.
+Ask. [When sure and enthusiastic] ask for it in simple, concise language. . .
+Believe. Believe in the accomplishment with strong faith, consciously and subconsciously.
+Work. Work at it. . . a few minutes daily, seeing yourself in the finished picture. Never outline details, but rather see yourself enjoying the particular thing . . . Eventually, you will see a time where it will just appear, as a gift or such, or you may see an opportunity to get what you we're asking for.
+Feel gratitude. Always remember to say, "Thank you, [the universe]," and begin to feel the gratitude in your heart. The most powerful prayer we can ever make is those three words, provided we really feel it. Feel as though you already have what you wanted.
+Feel expectancy. Train yourself to live in a state of happy expectancy. . . . Find a way it will appear in your life, and keep believing in that. May it be that someone gives it to you, or you find an initiation to get it.

Ego psychology is often confused with self psychology, which emphasizes the strength and cohesion of a person's sense of self. Although some ego psychologists write about the self, they usually distinguish the self from the ego. They define the ego as an agency comprised of mental functions, whereas the self is an internal representation of how one sees oneself. In ego psychology, emphasis is placed on understanding the functioning of the ego and its conflicting relations to the id, superego, and reality, rather than on the subjective sense of self.

Existential psychotherapy is partly based on the existential belief that human beings are alone in the world. This aloneness leads to feelings of meaninglessness which can be overcome only by creating one’s own values and meanings. We have the power to create because we have the freedom to choose. In making our own choices we assume full responsibility for the results and blame no one but ourselves if the result is less than what was desired.
Although humans are essentially alone in the world, we long to be connected to others. We want to have meaning in their lives while they have meaning in ours, but ultimately we must come to realize that we cannot depend on others for our validation, and with that realization we finally acknowledge and understand that we are fundamentally alone. The result of this revelation is anxiety in the knowledge that our validation must come from within and not from others. This anxiety is a positive thing, since it makes us aware of the limits of human existence and this makes us capable of reflecting on life instead of living thoughtlessly.

Social psychologists typically explain human behavior as a result of the interaction of mental states and immediate, social situations. In general, social psychologists have a preference for laboratory based, empirical findings. Their theories tend to be specific and focused, rather than global and general.
Social psychologists have studied attitude formation, the structure of attitudes, attitude change, the function of attitudes, and the relationship between attitudes and behavior. Because people are influenced by the situation, general attitudes are not always good predictors of specific behavior. For a variety of reasons, a person may value the environment and not recycle a can on a particular day. Attitudes that are well remembered and central to our self-concept, however, are more likely to lead to behavior, and measures of general attitudes do predict patterns of behavior over time.
- The Communicator, including credibility, expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness.
- The Message, including varying degrees of reason, emotion (such as fear), one-sided or two sided arguments, and other types of informational content.

Critical psychology is a branch of psychology that is aimed at critiquing mainstream psychology and attempts to apply psychology in more progressive ways, often looking towards social change as a means of preventing and treating psychopathology. One of Critical Psychology's main criticisms of conventional psychology is how it fails to consider or deliberately ignores the way power differences between social classes and groups can impact the mental and physical well-being of individuals or groups of people.

Positive psychology is the scientific study of optimal human functioning.
- Research into the Pleasant Life or the "life of enjoyment" examines how people optimally experience, forecast, and savor the positive feelings and emotions that are part of normal and healthy living (e.g. relationships, hobbies, interests, entertainment, etc.).
- The study of the Good Life or the "life of engagement" investigates the beneficial affects of immersion, absorption, and flow that individuals feel when optimally engaged with their primary activities. These states are experienced when there is a positive match between a person's strength and the task they are doing, i.e. when they feel confident that they can accomplish the tasks they face.
- Inquiry into the Meaningful Life or "life of affiliation" questions how individuals derive a positive sense of well-being, belonging, meaning, and purpose from being part of and contributing back to something larger and more permanent than themselves (e.g. nature, social groups, organizations, movements, traditions, belief systems).
The organization of these virtues and strengths is as follows:
-Wisdom and Knowledge: creativity, curiosity, open-mindedness, love of learning, perspective
-Courage: bravery, persistence, integrity, vitality
-Humanity: love, kindness, social intelligence
-Justice: citizenship, fairness, leadership
-Temperance: forgiveness and mercy, humility and modesty, prudence, self-regulation
-Transcendence: appreciation of beauty and excellence, gratitude, hope, humor, spirituality
Practical applications of positive psychology include helping individuals and organizations correctly identify their strengths and use them to increase and sustain their respective levels of well-being. Therapists, counselors, coaches, and various other psychological professionals can use the new methods and techniques to build and broaden the lives of individuals who are not necessarily suffering from mental illness or disorder.
[edit] Virtually Irreversible Personality Disorders
Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and actions. Because of the inflexibility and pervasiveness of these patterns, they can cause serious problems and impairment of functioning for the persons who are afflicted with these disorders.
Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it. These patterns are inflexible and pervasive across many situations. The onset of the pattern can be traced back at least to the beginning of adulthood. To be diagnosed as a personality disorder, a behavioral pattern must cause significant distress or impairment in personal, social, and/or occupational situations.
Personality disorders are noted on Axis II of the diagnostic manual of the American Psychiatric Association, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM, or DSM-IV-TR as it is currently in its fourth edition with a text revision). (Note: Mental Retardation is also noted on Axis II).
General diagnostic criteria for a personality disorder:
To make a diagnosis of a personality disorder, these criteria must be satisfied in addition to the specific criteria listed under the individually named personality disorders.
Experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture. This pattern is manifested in two (or more) of the following areas:
- cognition (perception and interpretation of self, others and events)
- affect (the range, intensity, lability, and appropriateness of emotional response)
- interpersonal functioning
- impulse control
=>The enduring pattern is inflexible and pervasive across a broad range of personal and social situations.
=>The enduring pattern leads to clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
=>The pattern is stable and of long duration and its onset can be traced back at least to adolescence or early adulthood.

People under 18 years old who fit the criteria of a personality disorder are usually not diagnosed with such a disorder, although they may be diagnosed with a related disorder. Antisocial personality disorder cannot be diagnosed at all in persons under 18. The DSM-IV lists ten personality disorders, which are grouped into three clusters:
Cluster A (odd or eccentric disorders)
- Paranoid personality disorder
- Schizoid personality disorder
- Schizotypal personality disorder
Cluster B (dramatic, emotional, or erratic disorders)
- Antisocial personality disorder
- Borderline personality disorder
- Histrionic personality disorder
- Narcissistic personality disorder
Cluster C (anxious or fearful disorders)
- Avoidant personality disorder
- Dependent personality disorder (not the same as Dysthymia)

The DSM-IV also contains a category for behavioural patterns that do not match these ten disorders, but nevertheless have the characteristics of a personality disorder; this category is labeled Personality Disorder NOS (Not Otherwise Specified). The revision of the previous edition of the DSM, DSM-III-R, also contained
- Passive-Aggressive Personality Disorder -- a pattern of negative attitudes and passive resistance in interpersonal situations.
- Self-Defeating Personality Disorder -- characterised by behaviour that consequently undermines the person's pleasure and goals.
- Sadistic Personality Disorder -- pervasive pattern of cruel, demeaning, and aggressive behavior.
These categories were removed in the current version of the DSM, because it is questionable whether these are separate disorders. Passive-Aggressive Personality Disorder and Depressive personality disorder were placed in an appendix of DSM-IV for research purposes.

The Indigo phenomenon has been recognized as one of the most exciting changes in human nature ever documented in society. The Indigo label describes the energy pattern of human behavior which exists in over 95% of the children born in the last 10 years … This phenomena is happening globally and eventually the Indigos will replace all other colors. As small children, Indigo’s are easy to recognize by their unusually large, clear eyes. Extremely bright, precocious children with an amazing memory and a strong desire to live instinctively, these children of the next millennium are sensitive, gifted souls with an evolved consciousness who have come here to help change the vibrations of our lives and create one land, one globe and one species. One thesis of The Indigo Children seems to be that many children diagnosed as having attention deficit disorder (ADD) or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) represent "a new kind of evolution of humanity."
- They come into the world with a feeling of royalty (and often act like it)
- They have a feeling of "deserving to be here," and are surprised when others don't share that.
- Self-worth is not a big issue. They often tell the parents "who they are."

Countess Elizabeth Báthory (Báthory Erzsébet in Hungarian, Alžbeta Bátoriová(-Nádasdy) in Slovak, Elżbieta Batory in Polish, August 7 1560 – August 21, 1614), was a Hungarian countess from the renowned Báthory family. The family is famous for defending Hungary against the Ottoman Turks. She is known as the most infamous serial killer in Hungarian and Slovak history and is remembered as the Bloody Lady of Čachtice, after the castle near Trenčín, in Royal Hungary, present-day Slovakia, where she spent most of her life.
After her husband's death, she and four collaborators were accused of torturing and killing hundreds of girls and young women, with one witness saying over 600 victims. Since she was a Countess she was never formally tried in court. The Báthory case has inspired many legends, including the false story of the countess bathing in the blood of virginal girls whom she killed in order to retain her youth.
Elizabeth was never brought to trial but remained under house arrest in a single room until her death.
King Matthias urged Thurzó to bring her to court and two notaries were sent to collect further evidence.[7] but King Matthias forbid the countess to emerge from her prison.
On 21 August 1614 Elizabeth Báthory died in her castle. She was buried in the church of Csejte
Between 1602 and 1604, Lutheran parish priest István Magyari complained about atrocities both publicly and with the court in Vienna, after rumours had spread. The Hungarian authorities took some time to respond to Magyari's complaints. Finally, in 1610, King Matthias assigned György Thurzó, the Palatine of Hungary, to investigate. Thurzó ordered two notaries to collect evidence in March 1610. Even before obtaining the results, Thurzó debated further proceedings with Elizabeth's son Paul and two of her sons-in-law. A trial and execution would have caused a public scandal, disgraced a noble and influential family (which at the time ruled Transylvania) and Elizabeth's considerable property would have been seized by the crown. Thurzó agreed that Elizabeth Báthory should be kept under strict house arrest, but that further punishment should be avoided. It was also determined that King Mattias did not have to repay a large debt for which he lacked sufficient funds.
Thurzó went to Csejte/Čachtice on December 29, 1610 and arrested Elizabeth Báthory and four of her servants, who were accused of being Elizabeth's accomplices. Thurzó's men reportedly found one girl dead and one dying. Another woman was found wounded, others locked up.
While the countess was put under house arrest (and remained so from that point on), her accomplices were brought to court. A trial was hastily prepared and held on January 7, 1611 at Bytča (Biccse in Hungarian). The trial was presided over by Royal Supreme Court judge Theodosious Syrmiensis de Szulo and twenty associate judges. Elizabeth herself did not appear at the trial. The trial process included intimidation and torture and did not follow modern judicial standards. She was also accused of witchcraft and pagan rituals.
The defendants at that trial were:
Dorottya Szentes, also referred to as Dorko Ilona Jó Katalin Benicka János Újváry, "Ibis" or Fickó. Dorko, Ilona and Fickó were found guilty and executed on the spot. Dorko and Ilona had their fingers ripped out before they were thrown into a fire, while Fickó, who was deemed less guilty, was beheaded before being consigned to the flames. A public scaffold was erected near the castle to show the public that justice had been done. Katalin Benicka was sentenced to life imprisonment, as she only acted under the domination and bullying by the other women, as implied by recorded testimony.
In 1610 and 1611 the notaries collected testimonies from more than 300 witness accounts. Trial records include testimonies of the four defendants, as well as 13 more witnesses. Priests, noblemen and commoners were questioned. Witnesses included the castellan and other personnel of Sárvár castle.
According to these testimonies, her initial victims were local peasant girls, many of whom were lured to Csejte by offers of well-paid work as maidservants in the castle. Later she is said to have begun to kill daughters of lower gentry, who were sent to her gynaeceum by their parents to learn courtly etiquette. Abductions seem to have occurred as well. She was also accused of witchcraft and pagan rituals.
The descriptions of torture that emerged during the trials were often based on hearsay. The atrocities described most consistently included:
severe beatings over extended periods of time, often leading to death. burning or mutilation of hands, sometimes also of faces and genitalia. biting the flesh off the faces, arms and other bodily parts. freezing to death. starving of victims. The use of needles was also mentioned by the collaborators in court.
Some witnesses named relatives who died while at the gynaeceum. Others reported having seen traces of torture on dead bodies, some of which were buried in graveyards, and others in unmarked locations.
According to the defendants' confessions, Elizabeth Báthory tortured and killed her victims not only at Csejte but also on her properties in Sárvár, Sopronkeresztúr/Deutschkreutz/, Pozsony and Bécs, and even between these locations.
In addition to the defendants, several people were named for supplying Elizabeth Báthory with young women. The girls had been procured either by deception or by force.
A little-known figure named Anna Darvulia was also rumoured to have influenced much of Báthory's early sadistic career but apparently died long before the trial.
The number of young women tortured and killed by Elizabeth Báthory is unknown, though it is often cited as being in the hundreds, between the years 1585 and 1610. The estimates differ greatly. During the trial and before their execution, Szentes and Fickó reported 36 and 37 respectively, during their periods of service. The other defendants estimated a number of 50 or higher. Many Sárvár castle personnel estimated the number of bodies removed from the castle at between 100 to 200. One witness who spoke at the trial mentioned a book in which a total of over 650 victims was supposed to have been listed by Elizabeth Báthory herself. This book was never mentioned anywhere else, nor was it ever discovered; however, this number became part of the legend surrounding Báthory.
