Nellimarla is located on the banks of Champavathi River at .[2] It has an average elevation of 190 metres (626 feet).

As of 2001 India census[3], Nellimaria had a population of 19,352. Males constitute 48% of the population and females 52%. Nellimaria has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 54%. In Nellimaria, 8% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Nellimarla Mandal had a population of 73,753 in 2001. Males constitute 36,657 of the population and females 37,096. Nellimarla has an average literacy rate of 51%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 62%, and female literacy is 41%.

Nellimarla jute mill is one of the largest jute mills in Andhra Pradesh.
The Denkada Anicut[4] was constructed across River Champavathi during 1965-1968. The Project is located near Saripalli village, Nellimarla Mandal. The Project utilizes 0.640 TMC of the available water. The Ayacut of 5,153 Acres has been stabilised in Denkada and Bhogapuram Mandals of Vizianagaram District.
C.K.M.G.J College has been training some brilliant and hard working students. It also organizes games every year at the college and school levels.
Nellimarla is especially famous for games in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. It has a play ground beside the Champavathi river.
Maharaja's Institute of Medical Sciences was established in 2003 here.
Moida is a village panchayat near Nellimarla ruled by the Penumatsa Zamidars. Sri Penumatsa Sambasiva Raju the longest serving MLA is from this hamlet. His second son Dr Suryanaryana Raju is the pilla zamindar of Moida.
State Bank of India has a branch in Nellimarla.
There are post offices at Nellimarla, Moida and Ramatheertham.
