Nazarene Bible Quizzing

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nazarene Bible Quizzing is a Bible competition for 7th-12th graders sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene. In Nazarene Bible Quizzing, participants must jump off of a chair to answer a question and only the first person to jump may answer the question. (Kind of like Bible Jeopardy.) Should someone jump before the question is completed they must finish the question and give the answer. In pro level quizzing, a quizzer will often jump on "What is..." and then finish the question and answer it correctly! The material each year is chosen from a predetermined list of books in the New Testament. Over its 8 year cycle, Nazarene Bible Quzzing covers over half of the New Testament.

[edit] Basic Terms

  • Quizzer - You!
  • Quizmaster - The person reading the questions to the quizzers.
  • Tossup Question - A question read by the quizmaster in which every quizzer currently quizzing in the round has the opportunity to jump. There are 20 tossup questions every round.
  • Bonus Question - A question asked to the opposing team(s) when a quizzer on one team answers a tossup question incorrectly.
  • Error - A tossup question answered incorrectly. You cannot receive an error for answering a bonus question incorrectly.
  • Error Out - The term signifying that a quizzer has received 3 errors and is out of that round.
  • Quiz Out - The term signifying that a quizzer has answered 4 tossup questions correctly and is out of that round. This prevents a quizzer who is doing well from taking more questions from the other quizzers.
  • Foul - Handed out by the quizmaster, a foul is given for inappropriate behavior, answering before the quizmaster recognizes you, failure to sit on one's seat, and other reasons at the quizmaster's discretion.
  • Pro/intermediate/novice - Competition levels in Bible quizzing. When quizzing at District levels, only pro quizzers go on to compete at regional and/or national levels.
  • Required memory - In every book that is used as quizzing material, there are a specified amount of verses that a quizzer can attempt to memorize. Memorization must be word perfect and the quizzer must also memorize the scripture reference. If a quizzer has succeeded in memorizing all the given verses for that month/year, it usually follows that the quizzer gets a required memory award.
  • Master memory - This is the most difficult form of quizzing memorization. Master memory consists of memorizing every word of every chapter of every book, (no matter how many chapters are in a book,) ver batim. Master memory is usually only done in high pro level divisions, and very few people usually attempt it. There are also, usually, Master memory awards, which are considered the most difficult to obtain.
  • District team - The team in any given district that had the best team score/placed 1rst.
  • All-star team - After the district team has been determined the top 5 quizzers (the 5 quizzers not including the ones on the district team with the highest individual scores,) are put on the same team and are qualified to compete at regional levels.
  • Jump seats - Motion sensors that are placed on the quizzing chairs and are connected to a switch-board. When a quizzer jumps (gets of the seat to answer a question,) A light that corresponds with his seat lights up on the switch-board, letting the quizmaster know who's jumped.

[edit] Regional & National Level Competition

Nazarene bible quizzing is separated into three basic divisions:

  • Districts - This division usually only consists of one whole state, unless the states are very small or very large (in which case districts are either states lumped together, or states divided.)
  • Regionals - This division usually consists of 4-10 states. Quizzers that qualify for regional level competition via doing very well in the yearly district quiz are usually the ones that study the most.
  • Nationals - Nationals usually take place in Kansas City, (Nazarene Headquarters,) and the top quizzers from around the country compete here.
