Some locations in Karnataka, People from Kuruba Community also use Naiker as surname. It means the same as Gowda and Patel, Like a leader of village or temple.

The Beda(means Hunters), Talavar (means Natives) also use Nayak as the last names. Now Beda and Talavar communities are identified as Nayaks. Like Kanaka dasa (Kanaka Nayaka), D.K. Naiker who are Kuruba Gowdas who has Nayaka or Naiker surnames.

This shows new comminities (castes grouping) happens with time. Communities like Vokkaliga, Kuruba, Yadava, Golla, Upaara, Nayaka have similar culture and food habits (meat eating Hindus who worship Shiva and mariyamma etc). They may merge into one in the near future as Gowdas.
