Phish Phood are a Northern Irish band. They incorporate various influences into their sound including rock, metal, ambience and electronica. The band is mainly Stephen Sexton and Nathan M Lynch. Each are skilled multi instrumentalists and on the noted recordings have been known to switch instruments, however in a live setting Sexton plays Guitars and occasionally Keyboards whilst Lynch plays Drums. They are frequently augmented of late by Debbie McCormack on bass and guitar, and have previously played with Drew Noble, Jason Anderson, Stuart Hampton and Louise Plant.
Stephen Sexton and Nathan M Lynch are the two main songwriters and have believed to have written in the region of 40 songs. One song, 'Swan' features McCormack on guitar however, but has never been played in any other setting than a recorded one. The band's oldest composition is still played, however in a radically different way than it is now.
Jason Anderson, originally being the most advanced musically was given the role of lead guitar in the band's early days but often couldn't compose songs and would often make mistakes which resulted in a violent encounter with Anderson being hit on the head by one of Lynch's drumsticks. No real songs were made during this time in part due to Anderson's erractic behaviour.
Sexton and Lynch wrote and recorded roughly 10 songs in his abscence, but soon realised that the sound was lacking and quickly taught a friend Stuart Hampton basslines to the songs. Before a lengthy break, they cut a two track acoustic tape.
When the band reconvened, Hampton upon return however didn't want to pursue the project further and subsequently quit. Non-deterred, Sexton and Lynch wrote furthermore songs and continued to record.
After an advertisement in a local music shop for a replacement bass player proved unsuccessful, Sexton asked another friend, Louise Plant to play bass. The first rehearsals went well, yet yielded few results. One song was completely written, but was however dropped later at the risk of a songwriting credit issue when she was eventually dismissed. Again, the band was back to two and continued to write songs.
During the summer of 2004, Sexton and Lynch began a spell in the Best Cellars Music Studio as part time workers, a place where they had previously rehearsed. They started a friendship with Dave McCulough, frontman of another Belfast band the Debonaires who is the engineer at the studio. The band learnt new ways of recording songs and may've been an influence on the computer based methods of recording the band now uses.
Longstanding friend, and bass player of considerable reputation Drew Noble, began playing bass with the partnership. His fluent bass-lines and creative musical abilities marked him out as an important addition to the band, and his role in the writing of Phish Phood's arguably best known song 'Detrimental Ovulation' is most notable. However, no further songs were written and Drew went to form a band with longtime friend Matthew Hill.
Sexton and Lynch began recording the best songs they had accumulated around October 2005. Sexton handles the majority of the guitar playing duties, whilst Lynch handles percussion. Bass parts have been believed to been shared equally on the sessions. Lynch has done the majority of the engineering and mixing on the album which has yet to been made available outside their circle of friends, yet is believed to contain songs such as 'The Search For...', the aforementioned 'Swan' and 'Lemonade'.
