Nathan Thorell (Born 8 September 1983) is a writer, consultant, musician, and accomplished wage slave based in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
[edit] Profile
Thorell is a graduate of the University of North Dakota (2006) with a Bachelor of Arts in the field of communication. Often criticised as "not funny" or "don't quit your day job," Thorell uses the internet and his creative ability to produce original content for the internet (with Studio BigPants, his production company since 2002, now expanding into video).
[edit] Writing
Thorell is most known for his contribution as staff reporter to the website, DubReview, a site dedicated to the English voice-over of Japanese animation, where he has worked since September 2003. While his focus was written reviews, a shift in website focus has since changed that to podcast-style reviews of which are often co-hosted with Mark and Dale Abersold. His main focus has been interviews with actors and directors in the industry.
Other work he has done has been published in various online and small-print publications. As of September 2007, he has been working on a book with author/editor Keaton Sondreal. The book's target audience is college students. While interest has been expressed by publishers and early drafts have garnered positive reviews, the book is still in its editing stages.
He often writes about video games and anime at a blog hosted by 1up. He has recently uploaded his new webcomic, I Play Games there. A comic he will tell you is "tasteless and terrible to look at."
[edit] Music
Thorell and his sister (Erika) created the band Body & Mind in 2004. The band was formed to perform anime covers for friends who had been in the shows of the songs performed. The first show was in March 2004 in Bloomington, MN. At first, the band was an acoustic set-up on the road where the actual lyrics were substituted for a vocalized version of the lyrics, but as the band progressed, the songs were sung in their original language.
Body & Mind produced 5 CDs at Studio BigPants before the bands split. The two have reunited to make one last album to be released May 2008. The album's name is currently called "Dancing in the Midnight." Thorell will continue to play guitar and drums on the album.
Thorell has announced that he is working on an EP for his new solo project, i killed fred mertz. The bands name comes from a reference to the animated program, Mission Hill. The setlist and direction of the album is still being worked on, but was last rumored to contain tracks with all instrumentation played by Thorell and some mash-ups. The album is scheduled to be released in summer 2008.
