[edit] Availability
Most, but not all, publications of the Nature Publishing Group are only available to subscribers. Unlike in open access, it is forbidden to publish the edited version, i.e. the final article PDF with layout. However, authors are allowed to publish the accepted, unedited paper on their website or the funding body's archive no earlier than 6 months after publication[1].
[edit] Business model
The costs of most of NPG's publications are recovered via subscription to individuals and institutions. As an example a personal subscription to Nature currently costs $199 per year [2]. Institutional licenses are calculated depending on the size of the institution. For a mid-sized university (12-20'000 students, staff, and researchers) in Europe a subscription to Nature currently costs well above €7000 [3]. Notable exceptions to the subscription model are the EMBO Journal, EMBO reports, Molecular Systems Biology, and the British Journal of Pharmacology where authors can opt for publication fee and open access[4].
