[edit] Policies
The government of China began to actively manage population growth in China in 1979. This is due to the enormous population on mainland China and growing birthrate. The government fears this may result in shortage of services, land, housing and other issues that affects large populations. [1]
Hence a new family planning policy was introduced. This is also known as the One-child policy. Urban citizens are able to have only one child and rural residents were given the maximum of two children. This was introduced to reduce or slow down the rate of birth in the population.[2] Although China's population with the new family planning policy has had some success, the population is projected to reach 1.6 billion people in 2050.
