[edit] History

The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) was started in the year 1946 with only Diploma Programs in Civil Engineering. The first batch consisted of 86 students, answered their attendance call sitting in a rustic room with thatched roof. Later, the classes were held in a temporary shed in the nearby Sharada Vilas High School campus, in Mysore. However, the untiring efforts of the retired senior engineer trio, Sri. S. Ramaswamy, Sri. D. V. Narasimha Rao and Sri. T. Ramarao,("Tunnel" Ramarao) the founders, gave fruition when the NIE was established by 1950 with its own class rooms and workshops on a sprawling 6 acre (24,000 m²).

The students, who were preparing for AMIE in Civil Engineering (NIE had started AMIE also in 1948 for intermediate - passed students), were permitted to change over to the regular degree course leading to B. E. Degree in Civil Engineering of the University of Mysore. Thus, NIE became the second Engineering College in the state of Karnataka and the first in Mysore. Later, the first batch of students in Civil Engineering graduated in 1953 from the portals of NIE. Progress of the Institute was so rapid that in 1956 the State and Union Governments recognised NIE as one of the institutions listed for development during the second and subsequent five-year plans. In 1958-59, NIE got private-aided institution status under grand-in-aid code of Karnataka government. Now the college under TEQIP, is trying to gain world bank assistance. A separate TEQIP cell is functioning in the college.

NIE is also on its way to gain the Autonomous Status Under the purview of AICTE.

[edit] Present Status

Today, NIE is one of the premier institutions in the country offering B.E. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Information Science, Electrical, Electronics, Industrial & Production, Mechanical Engineering and part-time B.E (evening course) for practicing Civil Engineering Diploma holders. The NIE also offers Master's degree specializations in Hydraulics, Power Systems, Production Engineering & System Technology, Computer Applications to Industrial Drives, Computer Network Engineering, Information Technology and Product Design & Manufacturing and Computer Applications (MCA). The NIE is a recognised research institution under VTU and offers Doctoral Programmes in Civil, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical and Industrial Production Engineering.

According to the Outlook Magazine survey - 2006 of the Top Engineering Colleges in the country, NIE holds 55th position, 6th position in the state and 3rd position among VTU affiliated colleges.

In fact, the NIE alumni have occupied high positions in educational institutes like IITs, IISc, and IIM, national research laboratories and in major industrial units in India and abroad. Some of the alumni have become very successful entrepreneurs.

As NIE marked the milestone of the fiftieth anniversary in 1996, a year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations were held during 1996-97. To mark the Diamond Jubilee occasion (2006-07), NIE Management through the NIE foundation has proposed to construct a hi-tech indoor sports complex at the newly acquired 6 acre plot near the existing campus. This project is likely to complete by September 2008. NIE has a landed property of 5.48 Acres of land under No.1817/A & 6.37 Acres of Land under No.1126/5-F31 & 1126/6-F31/1.
