The National College for School Leadership was established in 2000. NCSL is a government funded NDPB (non departmental public body) which offers head teachers and school leaders opportunities for professional leadership development. Its physical centre - a learning and conference centre situated in a striking building designed by Sir Michael Hopkins on the Jubilee Campus of the University of Nottingham - was opened in 2002 by Tony Blair.

NCSL’s four key goals are to transform children’s achievement and well-being through excellent school leadership; to develop leadership within and beyond the school; to identify and grow tomorrow’s leaders, and to create a ‘fit for purpose’ national College that is more strategic and offers school leaders even more leadership support. The Learning and Conference Centre (LCC) is the focus for many of NCSL's activities, but NCSL programmes can also be accessed regionally through a network of providers.

The college is sponsored by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and has a primary remit for England, though its work has a strong international reputation.

NCSL operates three sites - the LCC, at Ruddington and a small office in central London.
