The National Assembly is Afghanistan's national legislature. It is a bicameral body, comprising two chambers:
- The House of the People (Majles-e Numāyendagān): the 250-member lower house.
- The House of Elders (Majles-e Buzurgān): an upper house with an indeterminate number of seats.
A new parliament building is being constructed with Indian assistance. The former King of Afghanistan, Mohammed Zahir Shah, laid the foundation stone for a new parliament building on August 29, 2005.[1]
