Nassi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nassi is the name of the following people:
- Isaac Nassi, computer scientist and businessman
- Thomas Nassi (1892-1964), Albanian-American musician and pioneering music educator
The Hebrew word nassi (leader) is an acronym of the phrase "nitzotzo shel Yaakov Avinu - a spark of Jacob our father". The soul of every leader of Israel is an offshoot from the soul of Yaakov, father of the people of Israel (Megaleh Amukot, section 84). G-d tells Moses to take a census (a count) of all the people who can be part of the army, which means all men between the ages of twenty and sixty. Each of the twelve tribes had a leader, a nassi, who helped Moses do the counting.
Nassi is a modern sporting term used in football:
Commonly used in football the "Nassi" is a special move carried out by highly competent and skillful players that confuses an opponent. When faced with a footballer wishing to take the ball from you, at close distance one can perform the "Nassi". By conducting a highly complex maneuver which involves twisting whilst traversing in an apparent direction but across and behind your opponent, with perfect timing as the opponent tries to predict the path to be taken a fluid motion change of direction is taken. Fooled into taking the completely wrong direction the opponent fails to see his mistake until it is far too late, rendering the opponent in a state of confusion and bewilderment. The term was so called by the founder by surprisingly not naming the maneuver after himself, but naming the Nassi after his first victim.
