NASCAR Legends
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NASCAR Legends is a NASCAR racing simulator developed by Papyrus Design Group for Windows-based personal computers and released under the Sierra Entertainment marque in late 1999. Rather than being an updated version of their NASCAR titles featuring modern drivers, cars, and venues, NASCAR Legends was based on the 1970 NASCAR Grand National Season (the precursor to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series), and featured drivers, cars, and venues from that year. The game used the same highly-regarded game engine as NASCAR Racing 3. However, the game play reflects the performance of the 1970 race cars.
Player modes include: Single Player, Multi Player, and Championship Season. Players can also customize the four different car manufacturers available which include Ford, Mercury, Dodge, and Plymouth. Limited edition die-cast cars came with select games in the box. They were the #41 Plymouth Superbird and the #75 Ford Torino. Both of the die-cast cars are actual fictional cars in the game.
The 1970 season had many unique facets that you'll discover in this simulation. There were its tracks, such as Bowman Gray Stadium, a quarter-mile bullring surrounding a football field, and Riverside International Raceway, a twisty, hilly stretch of California real estate that demanded a pretty good understanding of trailing throttle. There were the drivers, many of them still holdig down nine-to-five jobs during the week while competing part-time as finances would allow, at NASCAR's highest level - the Grand National Division. The 1970 schedule was a gueling 48-race affair that consisted of a curious mix of track types and locales, television contracts and market sizes having no bearing whatsoever on its conception.
The most alluring detail of a return to 1970 probably lies within the cars themselves. Beefy Hemi V8 engines, long wheelbases and bias-ply tires. Cars that still rolled off the factory assembly lines, rather than getting built from the ground up in some race shop. Sleek body lines, some featuring outlandish wings and protruding nose pieces. Detroit automakers designed these cars to win races and winning races directly equated to the almighty sales curve.
