The Nantucket Independent is a weekly newspaper on Nantucket. It first went into circulation on July 2, 2003. In June, 2007, the Independent went to free, full-saturation distribution, providing free copies of the paper at its newsstands, on the steamship, and also mailing a copy to every registered mailbox on island. At 14,000 units, the Independent's unit circulation is now several thousand units higher than that of its main print news competitor, the The Inquirer and Mirror. In April 2008, GateHouse Media New England announced that it had purchased the newspaper.
