Description
English: Nahal Hemar canyon situated in the Judean Desert, Israel, near Masada, descending to the Dead Sea. There are headsprings located in the the canyon, providing salt and sweet water during the year to local flora and fauna.
עברית: נחל חימר. הדרומי בנחלי מדבר יהודה, נשפך לעמק זוהר, ומשם לים המלח. לנחל זה אגן ניקוז הגדול ביותר בנחלי מדבר יהודה. שמו של הנחל ניתן לו על שם נביעות האספלט שבו. שמו הערבי הוא ואדי אל מהואת - נחל התהומות, על שם הקניון העמוק שלו.

הקניון של נחל חימר הוא הקניון הארוך ביותר בנחלי מדבר יהודה, אורכו למעלה מ-10 ק"מ. עומקו של הקניון כ-300 מטרים. בנחל חימר שני מפלים גדולים. בנחל נובעים מעיינות של מים מתוקים ומלוחים. סביב המעינות וסמוך לגבים צומחת צמחיה מדברית עשירה. בנחל חיים שפני סלע ויעלים, ונצפה גם פרס שהוא מהדורסים הנדירים בישראל.

באפריל 1983 נתגלו במערה בנחל ממצאים מהתקופה הנאוליתית. מימצאים אלו היו פריצת דרך בחקר ההיסטוריה של מדבר יהודה, שכן הם הממצאים הראשונים שנתגלו מתקופה זו.
