Canton "Coronel Marcelino Maridueña" is located on the east side of the province of Guayas, Ecuador. It's located 70 Km away from Guayas capital, Guayaquil (Ecuador economic capital), and 391 Km away from Quito (Ecuador politic capital). [1] Marcelino Maridueña has 337 square km and a total population of 10,697 inhabitants.[2]

Since October the 24th of 1972 until January the 7th of 1992, Marcelino Maridueña was a rural parish of the canton Yaguachi. In 1992, it was converted to canton. Nevertheless, its holidays are celebrated on October the 24th of every year. [3] [4] This canton takes the name of a distinguished patriot who gave important services to the country and especially to Yaguachi.[5]

Marcelino Maridueña inhabitants work at one of these three big companies that are located in the region: - "Ingenio San Carlos": sugar refinery. Indeed, most of Marcelino Maridueña territory is covered of vasts crops of sugar rums. - "Papelera Nacional": the national paper producer. - Soderal alcohol factory: alcohol distillation.[6]
