[edit] Club career
Nélson joined SL Benfica from Boavista FC for €1.5 million in 2005, on a five-year contract.[1] He had previously played for Vilanovense FC and SC Salgueiros. He made the right-back spot his own upon his arrival, making twenty-five appearances during his first season. In the 2006-07 season he was as impressive.
Before this season in May 2005, he was involved in a car crash along with fellow portugeuse footballer Jose Bosingwa. Bosingwa who was behind the wheel of his Jeep was travelling to quickly and due to wet conditions he crashed the car into an embankment which was followed by the car bursting into flames. All four passengers were ok except one who had to get his foot amputated.
Nélson has also played in the UEFA Champions League, where Benfica made it to the last eight in 2005-06. In the Champions League 2006-07, after having faced Manchester United in the same competition and stage the season before (where Benfica won, eliminating the English from European competition), Nélson scored a fantastic long shot into Edwin Van Der Sar's top-right hand corner which could have given them a shock victory that would again knock Manchester United out and send Benfica through once more, however United won the game comfortably 3-1 and the Portuguese had to settle for the third UEFA Cup spot.
[edit] International career
Nélson received his first call-up to Portugal in the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship qualifying, against Kazakhstan in 15 November, 2006. He did not leave the bench.
He was granted Portuguese citizenship in December 2005, and played in 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
