Mysterious Girlfriend X (謎の彼女X Nazo no Kanojo X?) is a manga series written and illustrated by manga artist Riichi Ueshiba. It is serialized in Afternoon and published in Tankōbon format by Kodansha.
Mysterious Girlfriend X is the story of high school student Tsubaki Akira and a strange girl named Urabe Mikoto who is transferred to his school. The story progresses into a romance when Tsubaki realizes his attraction to Urabe.

The story begins with Urabe being introduced to Tsubaki's class. She does not attempt to be sociable with her fellow classmates, choosing to sleep at her desk during lunch, and soon earns a reputation as being strange. One day, Tsubaki wakes Urabe (who was again sleeping at her desk) late after class to tell her the building will be closing soon so she needs to go home. After she has left, without thinking, he tastes the drool pooled on Urabe desk. A few days later, Tsubaki falls ill with a mysterious flu-like sickness and is absent from school for five days straight. Urabe goes to visit him at his house, telling his sister Youko that she has classwork to give to him. She has Tsubaki lick drool off of her finger, which causes his symptoms to immediately subside. Urabe says this reveals that Tsubaki has feelings for her, and that they have a connection though their saliva. Over the next few days they began walking home together so Urabe can give Tsubaki a taste of her drool every day to keep him from falling ill again. She shows him her hobby of cutting designs out of paper with a pair of scissors she keeps tucked away in her panties. She also uses the scissors as a defensive weapon. Tsubaki later becomes her boyfriend after a showing of his emotions by dramatically destroying an old picture of a girl he once liked that he had been carrying with him for years, thus leading the story through the progression of their relationship through different events and the telepathic connection they share through their saliva.

- Tsubaki Akira
- The story's main character. Since he has tasted Urabe's drool the two have entered into a strange love relationship. He's reached the age where he's acquired some interest in the opposite sex, but every time seizing the initiative in romancing the beautiful Urabe, he can never seem to make any progress in their relationship.
- Urabe Mikoto

Urabe - The transfer student who came to Tsubaki's class. She has the ability to communicate her own emotions, as well as knowing about Tsubaki's emotions and dreams, through use of each others drool. When she shares saliva with Oka Ayuko, Oka's body will take on physical injuries Urabe's body has at the time. She is generally aloof and her behavior and words are always full of mystery, but to her love she is genuine and honest. Her hobby is cutting things out of paper with scissors. Not much is known about Urabe's past, her home life, or parents. Lately she has begun eating lunch with Oka, although Urabe insists she does not want to be friends with her.
- Oka Ayuko

Oka - She's only 143cm tall, but she's very full breasted. She was seen kissing with Ueno after school one day by Tsubaki, but it doesn't seem to bother her much. She is interested in being friends with Tsubaki and Urabe and is able to transmit her emotions to Urabe through her saliva similar to the connecton Urabe has with Tsubaki.
- Ueno

Ueno - Tsubaki's friend, he's been dating Oka for about one year but wishes to keep it secret from his classmates. He often speaks fondly about Oka in front of Tsubaki, who, in turn often gets romantic ideas to use on Urabe.
- Tsubaki Youko
- Akira's sister, who is seven years older than him. She spends her time cleaning the house. In her childhood she took care of Akira while her mother was busy, and now she exists as a mother figure to Akira.[1]

- Hayakawa Aika
- Tsubaki's classmate in junior high and also his first crush. She never learns of his previous feelings for her, and ends up attending a different high school than Tsubaki after graduation.
- Ogata
- A popular boy in Tsubaki and Urabe's class who is also on the school soccer team. He tries to ask Urabe out, but she rejects him because he has no reaction to tasting her drool like Tsubaki does.[2]
- Matsuzawa
- An attractive girl who attends Tsubaki's school but is one grade below him. She knows Tsubaki through a film club he joined and then stopped attending. Matsuzawa shows an interest in Tsubaki based on their similar tastes in movies. The attention she gives Tsubaki causes him to worry that it will make Urabe jealous.[3]
