[edit] Cohen
Cohen's rule of thumb applies to effect sizes, not correlations. — Chris53516 (Talk) 14:00, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
A correlation (r) is the most common form of effect size. Cohen has rules of thumb around interpretation. It is a major push in many fields of research to move away from simply interpreting statistical significance and actually interpret the size of various statistics. Cohen's rules of thumb are a way for people to get a sense of the practical importance of a correlation coefficient.
