A correlation (r) is the most common form of effect size. Cohen has rules of thumb around interpretation. It is a major push in many fields of research to move away from simply interpreting statistical significance and actually interpret the size of various statistics. Cohen's rules of thumb are a way for people to get a sense of the practical importance of a correlation coefficient.
